ウォール・オブ・サウンド:ザ・ヴェリー・ベスト・オブ・フィル・スペクター 1961-1966
答えはウォール・オブ・サウンド。ボスの場合は近年とみにその傾向が強いが、ウォール・オブ・サウンドの影響を受けたミュージシャンはその他にも、ビーチ・ボーイズ、大瀧詠一、ジョン・レノン、ジョージ・ハリスン等数知れない。大瀧詠一のＡ ＬＯＮＧ ＶＡＣＡＴＩＯＮが代表例だが、ベースラインとビートの上に、ギター、キーボード、ストリングス、コーラス等を何層も重ね、適宜エコー処理を施して造りだされる厚い壁のような音響構造のことだ。
そのウォール・オブ・サウンドの父がプロデューサーのフィル・スペクター。本作は、最後の曲を除いて、彼のレーベルであるフィレスからリリースされたシングル曲をミュージシャン横断的に集めて、ウォール・オブ・サウンドを見直そうという好企画。オリジナル・マスター・テープからの最新リマスター音源を使用しているとのこと。
最近達郎等の音楽のファンになった若い人には、是非その原点のウォール・オブ・サウンドは押さえてほしいと思う。約５０年前の曲ばかりだが、Ｍ３、４、１０等はエヴァー・グリーンの瑞々しさを湛えている。
資料も充実しており、フィルは「ワグナーの音楽の持つ広大さをロックに取り入れ、ティーンエイジャーの為のシンフォニーを作るつもりだ」ったとのこと。Ｍ３を聴いたビーチ・ボーイズのブライアン・ウィルソンがショックで自信をなくし、恋人になぐさめられて作ったいわば返歌が名曲「ドント・ウォーリー・ベイビー」であること等のエピソードや６１−６６年の音の変遷の分析も詳しい。
その彼は今は囚人。フィルは、ロックン・ロールのカラヴァッジオ的天才だ。
